The Artist Behind the Objects
Nick Voß — Artist and Founder of Voß Design Objects
I am Nick Voß, artist and founder of Voß Design Objects. Based in Aachen, Germany, I am developing a distinctive form of contemporary art in which exceptional fine woods and recycled wine corks are transformed into sculptural, one-of-a-kind works.
At the heart of my art lies the connection between nature, time, origin and memory. I select distinctive fine woods for their expressive grain, natural growth, irregularities, cracks and organic forms. These characteristics are not concealed or corrected — they define the character of each artwork.
Through the application of wine corks, the wood is given something new: a second bark. Hundreds or thousands of individual cork elements cover and surround the wood, following its natural form and becoming a new surface. The original story of the wood remains visible while becoming intertwined with the stories carried by the corks.
To me, a wine cork is far more than a material. It represents a wine, a vintage, a region and often a moment shared between people. Emblems, dates, symbols, coats of arms and traces left on the corks make parts of these histories visible.
Over the years, this idea has developed into my personal cork archive of more than 40,000 wine corks — an archive that continues to grow.
At the same time, I am building an international network of individuals, sommeliers, wineries and other partners who collect and contribute corks from different regions and countries. My long-term vision is to create artworks using wine corks gathered from around the world.
In this way, future works can carry not only materials from a particular country, but also the places, moments and stories that have shaped it. An artwork can become an archive of countless individual memories — connected through their origins and preserved in a new form.
For me, art is also a deeply personal form of expression. Through my work, I give form to thoughts, emotions and ideas that I cannot express in the same way through words. I do not begin with the intention of creating something perfect or predetermined. Instead, I allow the natural form of the wood, the individual corks and my own intuition to guide the process. In this way, every artwork becomes not only a composition of materials and memories, but also a reflection of myself at the moment of its creation.
Every artwork is created entirely by hand. The selection of the wood, the composition of the corks and their individual placement are part of a meticulous and time-intensive artistic process. No arrangement can ever be reproduced exactly. No piece of wood grows twice in the same form. And no collection of corks tells the same story.
My art exists at the intersection of sculpture, object art and material art. It brings naturally grown wood together with materials that have already lived a previous life and transforms them into something new.
I do not create objects for a moment. I create art that preserves stories — and is made to last.

Every artwork begins with the material. I select exceptional fine woods for their natural form, grain and individual character, allowing these qualities to guide the artistic direction of each piece.
Recycled wine corks are individually selected and carefully applied by hand. Following the natural form of the wood, they create a new surface — a second bark. In this way, each artwork emerges from the interaction between nature, origin, memory and artistic expression.

My art is rooted in respect for materials that already carry a history. Naturally grown wood is not forced into perfection, while recycled wine corks are given a new purpose and meaning.
Craftsmanship, precision and conscious material selection take precedence over speed and repetition. Every artwork is created as a unique piece — made to endure and to carry its story forward for generations.

My vision is to continuously expand the cork archive of Voß Design Objects across borders. Through collaborations with wineries, sommeliers and people from different parts of the world, I aim to collect recycled wine corks from diverse countries, regions and cultures.
These corks will become part of future artworks that carry more than material alone. They will preserve traces of places, vintages, encounters and moments connected to the countries they come from.
With every cork, the archive grows — and with it, the story of my art.

1. Selecting the Wood
Exceptional wood as the beginning of your artwork
Every commissioned artwork begins with the selection of an exceptional piece of fine wood. You can choose from available pieces or we can search together for a distinctive wood whose natural shape, grain and character form the foundation of your individual artwork.
2. Selecting the Corks
A personal selection from the cork archive
The artwork can be created using carefully selected recycled wine corks from my continuously growing archive of more than 40,000 corks. Depending on the concept, corks can be selected by motif, origin, vintage, winery or other individual characteristics — giving the artwork its own story and identity.
3. Creating the Artwork
Created entirely by hand
Once the materials have been selected, the artwork is created through a meticulous artistic and handcrafted process. Each cork is individually selected, prepared and positioned by hand, following the natural form of the wood. Through this process, the wood receives its characteristic second bark, transforming it into a unique work of art created specifically for you.
